The beginning of the Twentieth Century saw a renaissance in English song writing, the first since the time of Purcell. Composers such as Vaughan Williams, Butterworth, Warlock, Finzi and later Britten, all contributed to this surge of creativity. Tonight’s concert will feature the work of these composers, several of whom were both friends and contemporaries at the Royal College of Music in London.
The concert will explore the eternal theme of ‘Love and Loss’ and will include settings of works by English poets as well as arrangements of folk songs collected at the turn of the century.
These songs, varied in character and style, display a range and quality considered by many as being well able to stand comparison with those written by their contemporaries in mainland Europe. WCC is delighted that Iain Burnside, one of its patrons, has agreed to perform in the 2010 concert series.
